The Magical Story of Leigh Florist
Before most people owned a car, Samuel Leigh opened a quaint little flower shop. Nearly 100 years ago, Samuel was a nurseryman and florist who brought Leigh Florist to life! He held bridal consultations in the parlor of the house next door to the flower shop. The flower shop came to be after Samuel renovated his garage into this new establishment. Several additions were made to the building over the years, including a greenhouse. At the time, there were only a few houses in the area. Samuel was growing trees, shrubs, and flowers on the land that is now the Haddon Leigh section of town (named after Samuel himself).
Samuel Leigh eventually sold his business to Len “Barney” Johnson and his wife Rosemary in 1950. Barney was Samuel’s top designer, trusted friend, and valued employee. In 1975, the Bakelys purchased the shop from the Johnsons and carried on the business until they retired in 2004. This is where the magic of Leigh Florist continues…
Denise Leigh Herker purchased the shop to the delight of the Bakelys and the Johnsons. In fact, Barney Johnson, at age 80 was so excited, he worked at the shop as an all purpose helper. The moment Denise set eyes on the shop, she knew it was meant to be, especially since her name was already on the sign!
Having studied floral design in Pennsylvania, California, and Oklahoma, Denise is able to keep up with the ever changing trends that the floral industry has to offer. With that being said, Denise and her staff aim to create stunning visual displays, from everyday floral arrangements to extravagant wedding pieces.
